~ Significantly Reducing CO₂ Emissions from Primary Raw Materials Through the Upcycling of Hydrogen Production Byproducts, Contributing to the Realization of a Decarbonized Society ~
Hydrogen Technology, Inc. / KSK Co., Ltd. (Yugen Kaisha)
Hydrogen Technology, Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Yasuhiro Yamamoto) and KSK Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Ayase City, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director: Yasuhiro Kobayashi) have begun developing non-flammable water-based coatings using byproducts from hydrogen production. Full-scale sample production is underway. The companies will advance the mass production of this new material, which combines high flame-retardant performance with significant reductions in CO₂ emissions during raw material production compared to conventional methods.
■ Background of Development — The Challenge of Achieving a Fully Circular Resource Model —
During hydrogen production, “water glass (sodium silicate)” and “sodium aluminate solution” are generated as byproducts. These serve as key raw materials for flame retardants. Traditionally, these materials were produced and obtained through new chemical processes. Through technical collaboration, the project aims to upcycle these byproducts directly into a flame-retardant formulation, building a complete resource circulation model.
■ Three Key Features of This Project
(1) Contribution to Scope 3 through Significant Reduction in CO₂ Emissions
Compared to existing raw material procurement processes, this approach is expected to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions associated with manufacturing. This will directly help reduce supply chain emissions (Scope 3) in the construction, event, and display industries.
(2) “Non-combustible and Flame-Retardant Performance” Meeting Both the Fire Service Act and the Building Standards Act
We use a composite solution of “water glass” and “sodium aluminate solution,” both byproducts of hydrogen production, as our main raw material. This coating meets the “Building Standards Act” for non-combustibility in walls and ceilings, and the “Fire Service Act” for flame-retardancy in curtains and sheets. It provides non-combustible and semi-non-combustible performance on many materials, such as corrugated cardboard, plywood, PP resin, PVC, and expanded polystyrene. The resulting flame-retardant performance meets strict certification standards in Japan.
(3) Integration with KSK’s Patented Technology and 25 Years of Experience
KSK Co., Ltd. is a specialist in flame-retardant treatment with over 25 years of experience. The company is certified as a Fire and Disaster Management Agency Flame-Retardant Labeling Entity (Registration No. B-14-1231) and won the Japan Fire Retardant Association Chairman’s Award in 2022. KSK integrates its patent-pending non-flammable water-based coating technology (such as KS Retardant) with byproducts from hydrogen production to develop innovative next-generation flame-retardant materials.
■ Market Background and Future Outlook
Stricter environmental regulations and the move to non-halogenated alternatives are driving market growth. The Japanese flame retardant market is expected to grow from about 100 billion yen in 2025 to about 140 billion yen in 2034, with an average annual growth rate of 3.71%. Demand for safe, environmentally friendly fire protection is increasing in construction, electronics, and other industries.
Through this project, following effectiveness verification and increased market awareness, we plan to transition to a mass production and supply system targeting major general contractors and commercial facilities that promote SDG-based management. Leveraging the added value of a “circular model utilizing hydrogen production by-products,” we aim to establish a new industry standard in the flame-retardant market and secure a strong market share in this growing sector.
